Of course, we stopped at the site of the Battle of Little Big Horn. We had a detailed lesson in history about the battle and its significance, and General Custer, courtesy of PaPa!
From Custer's Last Stand, we encountered a MASSIVE storm system and thought we were all going to die (literally, we were pulled over at a gas station watching the wind and hail increase rapidly). After that, we unintentionally ended up in Belle Fourche, SD (the geographic center of the nation--who knew??!!).
After having survived the night, we went to the Black Hills of South Dakota and stopped in Deadwood. From there, since the weather was so poor, we took a drive-by of Mt. Rushmore (Sad, really. We wanted to take a proper tour).
After Mt. Rushmore, we spent the night in Alliance, NE (DUMP!). The next day, we stopped at Carhenge, we went to Sidney, NE to visit the World Headquarters of Cabela's.
On our way to Kearney, NE, we stopped to see one of the original Pony Express stops in Gothenburg, NE. We spent a lovely evening in Kearney, NE. The next day, we happened up the traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall. Of course, we stopped to pay our respects.
The next stop was Kansas City, KS for AWESOME BBQ (Jack Stack's BBQ). We spent our last night on the road just outside of Kansas City. On our last day, we stopped in St. Louis for more AMAZING BBQ (Pappy's). We made it just before they were sold out of food--and they planned for the 4th of July crowd.
Rest stop fun, on our home stretch:
